How to Get Armor of the Undying Ghost of Yotei

The Undying is one of the most powerful armor sets in Ghost of Yotei and is tied to the Mythic Story of the Undying Samurai. According to the legend, this samurai sported armor that was impenetrable to projectiles, rendering him almost immortal. Atsu herself doubts the story, though she is more interested in accessing the power of the armor than debating from where it originated.

Aside from its mythical voice, players will be eager to complete this quest as quickly as possible, since the rewards contribute significantly to survivability and combat prowess.

Starting the Tale of the Undying Samurai

Your journey begins in the Ishikari Plain, northwest part of the map. Go east of Ishikari Market until you reach a ruined village. There is a guy sitting next to a boulder here who tells a rumor of a story-teller with more information about the Undying Samurai. Walking up to him initiates the Mythic Tale.

Your target storyteller, Ugetsu, is to the north of the village. Go into the White Deer Woodlands, where there is a bear taking shelter behind the trunk of a tree. Across from this beast stands Storyteller’s Rest, the camp of Ugetsu. Go over to him, and he will relate the tale of the Undying Samurai. To continue, you will have to obtain four Wind Chimes dispersed throughout the Ishikari Plain.

Obtaining the Four Wind Chimes

Wind Chimes are the keys to the Undying Samurai’s lair. Once you acquire the first, you can find the others more conveniently by swiping up on the touchpad, causing their chimes to sound louder and blue ribbons to wave more vigorously. They can be found at the following locations:

  • First Wind Chime – North of the camp of Ugetsu, hanging from a tree above a bear feeding on a corpse. Kill or evade the beast, then collect the chime.
  • Second Wind Chime – South of the camp, attached to the end of a spear at the edge of the cliff. On the map, it is directly above the words “Nakagoya Spring,” between the “K” and the “A.”
  • Third Wind Chime – West of camp on the cliff overlooking Stone Jaw Coast. Look for a hanging corpse in a tree. Grapple it down with R2 and then climb down rocks carefully to retrieve the fallen chime.
  • Fourth Wind Chime – East of Ugetsu, on the Rumoi River. The chime is attached to a tree that grows in the middle of the river, but you will first have to kill a ronin looting the body in order to catch it.

With all four chimes in possession, the actual search for the Undying Samurai begins.

Finding the Undying Samurai

The Undying Samurai’s lair is to be found on the extreme western end of the Ishikari Plain, north of Stone Jaw Coast and west of Rumoi River. Use the Wind Chimes as your map—the more noise and speed they make while chirping, the closer you are.

When you arrive at the signposted cliffside, you’ll see scattered armor on sticks marking the entrance. A rope to a tree stump lets you drop down into an underwater cave. Within, put all four Wind Chimes on the wooden posts to call the Undying Samurai and start the boss fight.

Defeating the Undying Samurai

The fight against the Undying Samurai is constant. He tends to make his sword burst into flames, unleashing powerful blows that you need to counter with precise moves. Remember these fundamental rules of engagement:

  • Blue glint attacks must be parried.
  • Red glint attacks must be dodged.
  • All other attacks can be blocked or deflected.

You will need patience and fast reflexes. Once you’ve defeated him, you can plunder his body and finally get the Armor of the Undying.

The Armor of the Undying – Upgrades and Buffs

Its wear gives three buffs that enhance combat’s forgivingness and adaptability:

  • Staggering foes restores a small amount of health.
  • Perfect Dodge and Perfect Parry windows are slightly longer.
  • Focus Attacks occasionally have a chance to boost Stagger damage.

The base is already solid, but improving it at any Armorer in Ezo makes it even more valuable. Not only do each upgrade increase the buffs, but they also transform the look of the armor, providing additional plating and eventually a cape for the more sinister look. More advanced levels widen the health gained from staggers and widen the parry/dodge windows further—perfect for players who rely on sharp timing while in combat.
