The arrival of Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A allows trainers to tap into a Pokémon’s thematically significant hidden potential to elevate the bond of Pokémon and Trainer to new heights of strength and distinct transformations. The following guide will help you determine how to attain each Mega Stone when playing this game. You will discover what it takes to earn them through the Story Mission, purchase them from the Shop, or trade them at the Exchange Stand to achieve Mega Evolution and battle against anyone and everyone across Lumiose City and beyond.
How to Unlock Mega Evolution

Your journey with Mega Evolution begins after finishing Main Mission 9, which introduces the system through a pivotal battle against a Mega Absol. Once that encounter ends, your trainer permanently gains the ability to Mega Evolve eligible Pokémon during battles.
At first, you will have access to a limited number of Mega Stones. However, as you progress through later chapters of the story, you will gradually have access to more Mega Stones as either rewards from missions, items you can purchase at the shop, or items you can get in trades.
Starter Mega Stones
Starter Mega Stones

Your starter Pokémon will determine what your first Mega Stone will be in Main Mission 10.
Meganiumite goes to players who began with Chikorita. Emboarite is granted to those who chose Tepig. Feraligite is given if you started with Totodile.
Didn’t pick one of these starters? Don’t worry — after completing Main Mission 37, all three stones become purchasable from the Stone Emporium.
Acquiring Mega Stones

Once you’ve unlocked Mega Evolution, head over to the Stone Emporium on Vernal Avenue, which will start stocking select Mega Stones for purchase. Later on, you’ll gain access to another vendor — Quasartico Inc., a Mega Stone Exchange where you can trade Mega Shards for specific stones. Here’s an easy rule of thumb:
- Defeating a Rogue Mega Pokémon automatically rewards you with its corresponding Mega Stone.
- When a notable NPC uses a Mega Evolution, that same stone usually appears for purchase at Quasartico Inc. once their story arc concludes.
Stones Available at the Stone Emporium

After unlocking Mega Evolution, several stones can be purchased directly using PokéDollars.
- Gengarite, Medichamite, Abomasite, Scizorite – available for ₽50,000 each.
- Kangaskhanite, Steelixite, Garchompite – priced at ₽70,000 each.
- Charizardite X, Charizardite Y, and Blastoisinite – each available for ₽100,000.
All of these become available after completing Main Mission 10.
Mission-Based Mega Stone Rewards

As you progress, various missions reward you with stones after battling Rogue Megas. These include:
- Absolite from the Main Mission 9 encounter.
- Slowbronite, earned after defeating Rogue Mega Slowbro in Mission 11.
- Cameruptite, gained in Mission 12.
- Victreebelite, rewarded in Mission 13.
- Hawluchanite, from Mission 17’s Rogue Hawlucha.
- Banettite, earned in Mission 18.
- Mawilite, obtained during Mission 21.
- Barbaracite, dropped in Mission 22.
- Ampharosite, from Mission 23.
- Froslassite, rewarded in Mission 27.
- Altarianite, acquired after Mission 28.
- Venusaurite, rewarded in Mission 29.
- Dragoninite, from Mission 32.
- Tyranitarite, dropped after Mission 33.
- Starminite, collected during Mission 34.
- Zygardite, automatically obtained in Mission 37.
Quasartico Inc. Mega Stone Exchange

Once unlocked, the Quasartico Inc. exchange allows you to trade Mega Shards for rarer stones. Most trades require either 180, 240, or 360 shards, depending on rarity and mission progress.
For example:
Early exchange options like Pidgeotite, Manectite, Houndoomite, Audinite, Lopunnite, Sablenite, Sharpedonite, and Ampharosite cost 180 shards each.
Mid-tier stones such as Lucarionite, Gardevoirite, Galladite, Scolipite, Eelektrossite, Skarmorite, Clefablite, Falinksite, and others generally require 240 shards.
The highest-tier stones, including Chandelurite, Aggronite, Dragalgite, Salamencite, Metagrossite, Excadrite, Drampanite, and Alakazite demand 360 shards apiece.
Most of these unlock progressively after story milestones like Mission 15, Mission 25, Mission 31, or Mission 37, depending on the Pokémon tied to each stone.
Ranked Battle Rewards

Certain Mega Stones can only be obtained through competitive play:
- Greninjite: earned during Ranked Season 1.
- Delphoxite: unlocked in Season 2.
- Chesnaughtite: obtained in Season 3.
With all 64 Mega Evolutions currently in the base game including 26 brand-new ones mastering this system gives you access to one of the most dynamic and powerful features in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Collect them all to dominate every battle across Lumiose City and beyond.
